Dr Beatrice De Carli is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, School of Architecture and Landscape, where she leads the Designing Just Spaces research cluster and is affiliated with the Urban Institute. She has served as Managing Associate of Architecture Sans Frontières UK (ASF-UK) since 2013 and is the newly appointed Chairperson of Architecture Sans Frontières International, having previously served on the Board from 2008–2012 and 2013–2016.

Across practice, research, and teaching, Beatrice’s work centres on collaborative, design-based approaches to advancing social and environmental justice in city-making, particularly in contested and fragile urban contexts. A committed advocate for community-led design and planning, she champions initiatives that amplify collective voices—from the Urban Commons Research Collective, with whom she co-published the Urban Commons Handbook, to the Architecture-in-Development Global Challenge, where she has served as a jury member and mentor.

At ASF-UK, Beatrice has led flagship programmes including Challenging Practice—delivered in collaboration with several ASF-Int members—and Change by Design, which includes a formative, long-term collaboration in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, alongside ASF-Int member 1to1 – Agency of Engagement.
