Kampung Susun Kunir is a 33-unit low-rise apartment complex located at the edge of Kota Tua (Old Town), Jakarta. It was built for the former residents of Kampung Kunir, who were evicted in 2015. The term Kampung Susun (Stacked Kampung) reflects a transformation of living environments—from the morphology of an informal settlement to a vertical housing model—realized through a participatory approach. Through a five-year co-design process (2017–2022), the residents worked collaboratively with Community architects to shape the design. The Jakarta Provincial Government played a key role in implementing these ideas into a built reality.

Kampung Susun Kunir is founded on three main pillars:

  1. Sustainable Healthy Housing, with each unit designed for natural ventilation and daylighting, and the entire roof allocated for rainwater harvesting;
  2. Cultural Heritage Preservation, marked by the archaeological remains displayed in the on-site Kunir Gallery;
  3. Socio-Economic Empowerment, supported through shared spaces on the ground floor and along the corridor levels for communal and economic activities.

Through this housing model, the residents of Kampung Kunir are reclaiming their right to secure tenure, ensuring continuity of life in the historical fabric of Kota Tua.
